History

During four days in August 1963, IK Sävehof arranged a predecessor to Partille Cup, Junior Cup 63, for 40 teams from 8 different nations. The tournament was held at an athletic centre named Vallhamra Idrottsplats next to a school. It was raining and hailing and the grass fields were totally ruined during the games.

The club never thought that they could repeat the tournament, but the principal for the school remade the courts with asphalt. Then you could play in any weather.

Sävehof wanted to organize this tournament as early as 1962, but the Swedish Handball Association did not authorize it. The reason was that ”in such a type of tournament that Sävehof wanted to create, no teams would want to participate”.

In 1963 you could never imagine that Partille Cup would be the predecessor to all similar tournaments in the world – regardless the sport. How many million new contacts between people from both the same and different cultures that have been made can’t be estimated.

Now Partille Cup is visited by almost 1000 teams from some 50 nations.

Today the tournament is played entirely in the city of Gothenburg, with Heden as its middle point. A unique concept that gives many advantages, the main one being the closeness to everything. Within walking distance you will find our Opening Ceremony arena Scandinavium, our large playing center Heden with close to 50 courts and our large amusement park Liseberg

The tournament was reopened again in 1970, now under the name of Partille Cup. With the help of an old hand operated copy-machine in the basement they could make over 900 invitations to all over the world. 140 teams from 8 nations – both boys and girls entered the tournament.

No one could imagine that Partille Cup would be the ”father” of all similar tournaments in the world irrespective sport. How many millions new contacts between people from both similar and foreign cultures that have been made can not be all estimated. Now over 900 teams from 50 nations participate in the tournament.

Today Partille Cup is held entirely in the city of Gothenburg with the playing fields at Heden as its base, a concept with many advantages.
