Tournament Regulation Special Trophy
Tournament Regulations –
Special Olympics Handball Trophy
1. Competition Format
The competition is based on the Swedish Handball Federation's regulations and is open to players with cognitive disabilities.
Cognitive disabilities include a wide range of conditions affecting mental processes and their outcomes. Intellectual disabilities (ID) and neurodevelopmental conditions (NDC), such as autism and ADHD, are examples of cognitive disabilities.
The tournament begins with divisioning matches to assess the teams' abilities and ensure that matches are as evenly balanced as possible.
The results of the divisioning process will determine the group allocations and match schedule.
2. Playing Format
Mixed teams are permitted.
Matches are played outdoors on artificial turf.
The competition format may be adjusted depending on the number of participating teams.
All teams are guaranteed a minimum of five matches during the tournament.
3. Number of Players
Maximum of 12 players per team.
All players must be registered and approved before the start of the tournament.
4. Match Duration
Divisioning matches: 10 minutes.
Group stage matches: Minimum 2 × 10 minutes.
Match duration may be extended depending on the tournament schedule and competition format.
5. Divisioning
Divisioning is a fundamental part of the Special Olympics Handball Trophy and is conducted to ensure fair and balanced competition between teams of similar ability levels.
Teams will be divided into two divisions: Division 1 and Division 2.
In Division 2, support persons (on-court assistants) are permitted to assist players when necessary.
During the divisioning process, teams are assessed based on:
Players' experience and abilities.
Team composition.
Overall match performance and pace of play.
Divisioning results are used solely to determine the appropriate competitive division and do not count towards the final tournament standings.
6. Fair Play & Safe Environment
The Special Olympics Handball Trophy is built on the values of respect, enjoyment, and togetherness.
We expect that:
Players, coaches, team officials, and spectators contribute to a positive and supportive atmosphere.
The emphasis is placed on participation and enjoyment rather than solely on results.
Coaches and team officials take responsibility for their team's conduct both on and off the playing field.
The Tournament Management reserves the right to take appropriate action if a team or individual fails to comply with these principles.
7. Referees & Tournament Management
Matches will be officiated by trained referees with experience in Special Olympics and inclusive sports.
The Tournament Management is responsible for:
Match scheduling.
Match operations and organisation.
Divisioning and team classification.
Any necessary rule adjustments during the tournament.
All decisions made by the Tournament Management are final.
8. Amendments and Interpretation
The Tournament Management reserves the right to amend or adjust the competition regulations before or during the tournament whenever necessary to ensure a safe, fair, and well-organised competition.
