Henrik Signell

For the first time in nine years, a youth team from Peru is back at the Partille World Cup. Also present is Henrik Signell – the handball coach who got to know the team during the 2016 tournament and still carries the memories from that meeting today.

It was through the Partille World Cup’s Olympic Solidarity project that Signell in 2016 worked with players from smaller handball nations and developing countries. One of the teams came from Peru – a meeting that had a great impact on him both professionally and personally.

– Peru was special in many ways. I still remember almost every player on the team, and they were really good at handball too. I still hold them close to my heart, says Signell.

During the tournament week, he led several training sessions, coached from the sidelines, and developed a strong relationship with both the players and the team’s coach. Since then, the contact has been maintained.

Now, he and the Peruvian coach from 2016 are planning a deeper collaboration. The goal is to organize a training camp or seminar in Peru, where local coaches will be invited to improve their skills and contribute to the development of handball in the country.

– There is so much commitment and will, and we want to help build something long-term – so that more young people get the chance to play handball, he says.

The team’s return to Gothenburg is a powerful moment for Signell.

– This is not just a reunion – it is a continuation of a journey we started nine years ago.
