Only happy faces at Heden
"Everyone here is like a big family"
The first day of Partille World Cup 2024 was a success, and on Wednesday morning, the excitement was obvious at Heden.
- Everyone participating in the tournament is like one big family, says Arno Van Caeter, a player for Don Bosco Gent HC's B18 team.
The second day of matches in Partille World Cup 2024 is underway. The opening day was eventful, featuring both handball matches and the tournament's opening ceremony.
- It was a very entertaining day. We drew against a Danish team in our first match, which we're very pleased with. Then we attended the opening ceremony in the evening, and it was an amazing experience with great music, says Arno Van Caeter.
For the Belgians, Wednesday began with a narrow loss to Norwegian side Nordstrand IF 1. Despite the defeat, player Simon Vanakker remained optimistic.
- It was a close match. We made quite a few technical mistakes and conceded some easy goals. But we were strong in defence and only lost by one goal, so ultimately we're happy, he says.
This is the third time the Belgian side is participating in Partille World Cup. They have looked forward to return.
- There are many teams and lots of friendly people around the place. Everyone participating in the tournament feels like one big family because we all share a passion for handball, says Arno.
What is your favourite memory from Partille World Cup?
- It has to be our first win in the tournament, it was a big surprise for us. Coming from Belgium, we don't really expect to win many matches. It's a cherished memory, he says.
The boys are looking forward to an exciting week both on and off the pitch. - We aim to win at least one match. We had a narrow loss today and a draw yesterday, so we feel we're getting close, says Simon.
- Otherwise, we look forward to exploring the city and enjoying the wonderful atmosphere here around Heden, says Arno.
