Waste less, win more
The schools are competing to see who has the least food waste by the end of the week.
The world is in a crisis, and a collective transformation is needed to achieve the global goals. Partille World Cup 2024 is contributing with its concept, Celebrate the Planet. The message is to work together towards a more sustainable world.
Food waste is a major issue that contributes to increasing global emissions. As part of Celebrate the Planet, Partille World Cup’s new climate initiative, a competition has been launched this year to reduce food waste in schools.
Every year, tons of food are thrown away, contributing to negative climate impact. Between 8-10 percent of global greenhouse gases come from food waste. Project Food Waste aims to educate young participants at Partille World Cup about the climate impact and ensure that all food on the plate is eaten.
On Wednesday, we visited Fässbergsskolan which is currently leading with the least food waste among all the schools Partille World Cup is collaborating with this year. Some of the girls living and eating at the school this year are Stella Gustafsson, Liv Ekström, and Siri Schultz from Skövde HF.
“We talk a lot in school about how food waste affects the climate and how it’s bad. It’s good not to waste food because we should use all the food available. Now it’s like a reflex, what we put on our plates, we eat,” says Stella Gustafsson.
This mindset is important for everyone to carry throughout the tournament. The girls will continue to empty their plates and hope to win this year’s Project Food Waste!
The winner gets ice cream as a prize for their effort!
