Fram was the first Icelandic team to win – now they want to succeed again

Fram won Partille Cup back in 1974. They created history as the first Icelandic winners in the tournament.

50 years later – they want to win again and create new fantastic memories in Gothenburg.

Around 5 000 participants from eight countries took part in Partille Cup in the summer of 1974 and among them several Icelandic clubs. All the Icelandic teams did very well in the tournament. Fram from Reykjavik – one of the biggest handball clubs in Iceland – participated that year for the first time. They participated with three teams. One of them, The B14 team, managed to win the Partille Cup title. That was the first time for an Icelandic team won Partille Cup in any cetegory. Atli Hilmarsson was one of the players in that team. Atli became later a professional handball player, playing both in Germany and Spain and for many years apart from beeing a part of the Icelandic national team over a long period of time. He played in the Olympics both 1984 and 1988. So he has a lot of memories from his successful handball career.

When asked if he remembers this Partille Cup summer, Atli replied:
– Yes, I rembember that well altough nearly 50 years has passed. Partille Cup was a great experience and left me with unforegettable memories. Of course, that we won the title makes it even better. We did very well and managed to get to the final. I don‘t remember the game in details but I think we played against a Danish team.
That is correct. They played against the Danish team Næstved. The score was even after normal time but Fram won by eight goals to five after overtime.

It will be 50 years ago next summer! Fram will be among many other Icelandic clubs participating in Partille Cup as they have done regulary since this first time in 1974. So it‘s kind of a double anniversary for Fram. It will be 50 years since they first took part and it will also be 50 years since they managed to be the first Icelandic club to win Partille Cup. Fram will bring a large group to Partille Cup 2024 and their spokesman says that their main goal is, like usual, to enjoy the unique atmosphere at the biggest youth handball tournament in the world together with other international competitors.
– But at the same time it would be perfect if we could manage to win the Partille Cup title in some category. We will of course do our best to do so. Maybe that is written in the sky for Fram, says the spokesman.
