Handball is getting bigger in the Faroe Islands

Handball is growing as a sport in the Faroe Islands. Last year, twelve teams from the country participated in Partille Cup. In 2024, we will see new teams from the Faroe Islands in the tournament.

Team Klaksvik is one of the clubs that will send teams to Partille Cup next summer.

A coach from Team Klaksvik tells us about their handball club:
– Team Klaksvík was establish in 2006, on September 12th. This is a handball club with about 120 members. In our town Klaksvik has football always been the main sport but it seems to be changing a little bit, because this is the first time the club has had two teams for Boys 16, says the coach.

Other clubs have told good stuff about Partille Cup. Now, they're excited about coming to Gothenburg and playing in the world's largest youth handball tournament.
– We have heard about Partille Cup from other team in the Faroe Islands, mostly H71 from Hoyvík/Tórshavn. We will compete in the categories Boys 14 and Boys 16. And we hope that the boys will have a good experience, and a good time together. Hopefully they will not lose too much, she says with a smile.

What are the boys most excited about?
– The boys are most excited about playing handball games, meet other handball players from different countries, and to have a good time together.
How big is handball in the Faroe Islands? Is it getting bigger?
– Yes, handball is getting bigger. Our national team for men has for the first time qualified for the European Championship, that will be played in Germany 2024. Therefore we think that is a part of the reason that handball is getting bigger in the Faroe Islands, says the coach.
