The refereeing academy helps young referees develop further

Kian has returned to the referee academy during the Partille World Cup – Pavle is doing his first week. Both highlights the coaching as a crucial aspect of their development as referees. – I took huge steps like this after last year, says Kian, measuring a little over a meter with his hands.

During the Partille World Cup, the refereeing academy is taking place, with around 80 young referees aged 16 to 22 taking part. The referee pairs are followed throughout the week by referee coaches, who are elite and national referees, providing ongoing feedback and coaching between matches. The aim is to strengthen both confidence and knowledge, giving the referees the tools to take on the role of match officials.

– It is often small things that make a big difference. You get direct feedback and can adjust it for the next match. In the previous match I got tips on how I use my body language, and in this match I was able to apply it, says Kian Benfredj.

For Pavle, it is his first time refereeing at the Partille World Cup.

– It is my first time as a referee at the Partille World Cup. There are many international teams here, and you notice that there are different ways of playing handball depending on the country. It makes you think a bit more when you referee different teams and different countries, says Pavle Mirkovic.

It has hardly been a full day, but they are already taking in new lessons.

– I have already started thinking in a different way, like how I hold my arms in certain signals or how I can be clearer towards the players in some situations. You notice straight away when you change small things, says Kian.
